The Founding Story
The story of Raleigh EcoPallet began with a simple but frustrating observation. Driving past warehouses and industrial parks across the Raleigh-Durham area, it was impossible to miss the stacks of pallets piled up behind loading docks — pallets that had been used once, maybe twice, and were now waiting to be hauled to a landfill. At the same time, other businesses just a few miles away were spending significant money buying brand-new pallets that were essentially identical to the ones being thrown away.
That disconnect was the spark. The idea was straightforward: what if there was a company that could bridge this gap? A company that would collect used pallets from businesses that did not need them, inspect and grade each one to ensure quality, and then make them available to businesses looking for affordable, reliable pallets. It would save businesses money on both ends — the sellers would avoid disposal fees, and the buyers would get quality pallets at a fraction of the new price. And every pallet that went through this cycle was one less pallet in a landfill.
Raleigh EcoPallet officially launched in 2018 with little more than a truck, a small lot, and a lot of determination. The early days were spent knocking on doors, visiting warehouses, and explaining to skeptical operations managers that their "waste" pallets actually had real value. Convincing businesses on the buying side was easier — the cost savings spoke for themselves. But building a reliable supply chain of quality used pallets took patience, consistency, and a willingness to show up day after day.
From Waste to Resource
Raleigh EcoPallet was born from a simple observation: thousands of perfectly usable pallets were being thrown away every day in the Raleigh-Durham area. Warehouses, factories, and distribution centers were paying to dispose of pallets that still had years of life left in them.
Zero Pallet Waste
We set out with an ambitious goal: ensure that no pallet in the Raleigh area ends up in a landfill. Every pallet that comes through our facility is either repaired and resold, recycled into new products, or broken down into raw materials for other industries. Our reuse rate sits at 95%.
Scaling Sustainably
What started as a small operation quickly grew as businesses recognized the value — both economic and environmental — of used pallets. Today, we handle over 50,000 pallets annually, serving everyone from small businesses to large-scale industrial operations across North Carolina.
Your Pallet Partner
We've expanded from simply buying and selling used pallets to offering a full suite of services: recycling, transport, repair, custom fabrication, and consultation. We carry wood pallets, plastic pallets, and all the accessories you need. But used pallets remain at the heart of everything we do.
Our Journey in Detail
Every year has brought new challenges, milestones, and growth. Here is the detailed story of how Raleigh EcoPallet evolved from a startup idea to the region's leading used pallet provider.
The Startup Year
Raleigh EcoPallet was officially founded. Starting with a single truck and a small storage lot, operations began by visiting local warehouses and offering to haul away used pallets. In the first six months, we processed approximately 2,000 pallets — mostly 48x40 GMA standards collected from Raleigh-area distribution centers. Revenue was modest, but every pallet saved from the landfill validated the mission.
Building the Supply Chain
The focus shifted to establishing reliable pallet supply partnerships. Secured agreements with three regional distribution centers that provided consistent weekly pallet flow. Invested in a proper inspection and grading process, establishing the A/B/C grading system that customers could trust. Word spread through the Raleigh business community, and demand began outpacing supply for the first time.
Adding Repair Services
Launched our pallet repair program, which was a major turning point. Instead of recycling pallets with minor damage, we began repairing them — replacing broken boards, re-securing fasteners, and restoring them to sellable condition. This single decision increased our material recovery rate from 70% to over 85% and added a new revenue stream. Despite the challenges of the pandemic year, our business grew as companies sought cost savings.
Expanding the Territory
Extended delivery coverage beyond the immediate Raleigh area to serve 35+ cities across North Carolina. Added two more delivery vehicles to the fleet and hired additional drivers. Began serving customers in Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Wilmington. Annual pallet volume crossed the 25,000 mark for the first time. Launched our buy-back program, offering businesses cash for their unwanted pallets.
The 95% Milestone
Achieved a 95% material recovery rate — meaning that out of every 100 pallets that entered our facility, 95 were either resold, repaired and resold, or recycled into useful products like mulch and biomass fuel. Only 5% went to waste, and even that was non-recyclable hardware and treated wood requiring special handling. This milestone put us among the most efficient pallet recyclers in the region.
Product Line Expansion
Crossed the 50,000 annual pallet processing milestone. Expanded our product offering to include plastic pallets and custom pallet fabrication. Began offering ISPM-15 heat treatment services for customers shipping internationally. Added a dedicated sales team to manage growing customer base and provide personalized service. Introduced volume pricing tiers for large orders.
Facility Upgrade
Invested in upgrading our primary facility with improved sorting infrastructure, covered inspection areas, and expanded storage capacity. New equipment allowed faster processing times and better quality control. Began tracking environmental impact metrics more rigorously — trees saved, carbon offset, landfill diversion tonnage. These numbers became an important part of our story and reporting to customers.
Looking Forward
Earned sustainability recognition for our zero-waste commitment and environmental practices. Launched expanded recycling program partnerships with local environmental organizations. Began exploring technology solutions for inventory management and customer ordering. Set ambitious goals for 2026: serve 50+ cities, process 75,000 pallets, and reach 97% material recovery rate.

Challenges We Overcame
Building a used pallet business from scratch was not without obstacles. Here are the major challenges we faced and how we turned them into strengths.
Inconsistent Supply Quality
We developed our rigorous six-step inspection process and A/B/C grading system. This gave customers confidence in what they were buying and allowed us to build a reputation for consistent quality that differentiated us from competitors who sold ungraded pallets.
Skepticism About Used Pallets
Many businesses were hesitant to switch from new pallets to used ones, worried about reliability and appearance. We addressed this by offering sample orders, transparent grading, and side-by-side comparisons showing that Grade A used pallets perform identically to new ones at half the cost.
Building Supply Partnerships
Convincing businesses to let us haul away their pallets instead of their existing waste hauler required patience and persistence. We offered better terms, more reliable pickup schedules, and in many cases paid for pallets that companies were previously paying to dispose of.
Scaling While Maintaining Quality
As demand grew, maintaining our inspection standards became more challenging. We invested in training additional inspectors, improving our facility layout for efficient processing, and implementing quality audits to ensure every pallet met our published grade standards.
Pandemic Disruptions
The 2020 pandemic disrupted supply chains across every industry. We adapted by diversifying our supply sources, adjusting our pricing to reflect market conditions, and positioning ourselves as a cost-effective alternative for businesses looking to reduce expenses during uncertain times.
The Vision That Drives Us
"The vision was never just about pallets. It was about proving that a business can be profitable and environmentally responsible at the same time. Every pallet we keep in circulation is proof that the circular economy works. When a business saves money by buying used pallets, and a tree stays standing because we did not need to cut it down for a new one — that is the vision in action. We want to build a company that our community is proud of, that our employees love working for, and that leaves the environment better than we found it."
The Raleigh EcoPallet Team
Where We Are Headed
We are proud of how far we have come, but we are even more excited about where we are going. Here are our goals for the coming years.
Expand to 50+ Cities
We plan to extend our delivery network to serve more communities across North Carolina and into neighboring states. Our goal is to make quality used pallets accessible to businesses regardless of their location.
75,000 Pallets Annually
Increasing our processing capacity to handle 75,000 pallets per year will require continued investment in our facility, fleet, and team. More pallets processed means more environmental impact.
97% Recovery Rate
We are pushing toward a 97% material recovery rate. The remaining gap primarily consists of treated wood requiring specialized disposal. We are researching new recycling partnerships to close this gap.
Technology Integration
Investing in inventory management systems and online ordering to make it easier for customers to check availability, place orders, and track deliveries. Technology should make the buying experience seamless.
Deeper Community Impact
Expanding our community involvement through additional environmental education programs, local sponsorships, and partnerships with organizations working on sustainability initiatives in the Triangle area.
Workforce Development
Growing our team with a focus on training and career development. We want Raleigh EcoPallet to be a place where people build careers, not just hold jobs. Investing in our team means better service for customers.
Rooted in Raleigh
Raleigh is more than just where our business is located — it is the community that shaped us. The Triangle area's mix of technology companies, distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, and small businesses creates a diverse and dynamic market for pallet services. We understand the unique needs of this region because we are part of it.
Our team members live in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Garner, and surrounding communities. They shop at local stores, eat at local restaurants, and send their kids to local schools. When we help a Raleigh business save money on pallets, that money stays in the local economy. When we divert pallets from landfills, it is our local environment that benefits.
We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen in the Raleigh-Durham community. That means not just running a successful business, but contributing to the community through fair employment practices, environmental stewardship, and active participation in local organizations and initiatives.
Employee Spotlights
The people behind Raleigh EcoPallet are what make us special. Here are a few of the dedicated professionals who keep our operation running.
Lead Inspector
4 years with the team"Every pallet tells a story. Some come in looking rough but have solid bones — those are the ones I love restoring to Grade B. The satisfaction of knowing every pallet that leaves here has been checked by our team keeps me motivated."
Route Driver
3 years with the team"I know every loading dock in the Triangle. Building relationships with the warehouse teams at our pickup and delivery locations is what makes this job rewarding. When they see my truck pull up, they know their pallets are in good hands."
Repair Specialist
3 years with the team"People do not realize how much life is left in a pallet that looks beat up. A couple of new boards, some fresh nails, and you have got a pallet that will last another three to five years. It is satisfying work knowing you are reducing waste."
Our Culture
The way we work matters as much as what we do. These principles define the culture at Raleigh EcoPallet and guide how we interact with each other and our customers.
Every pallet matters.
Whether it is the first pallet in a 20-unit order or the 50,000th pallet we process that year, each one gets the same careful inspection and handling. Consistency at scale is our standard.
Honest communication builds trust.
We tell customers exactly what they are getting. If a Grade B pallet has a visible repair, we say so. If we cannot fill an order on time, we let you know immediately. Surprises erode trust; transparency builds it.
Environmental impact is not optional.
We do not treat sustainability as a marketing slogan. It is built into every process — from how we sort incoming pallets to how we dispose of materials that cannot be reused. Every team member understands their role in our environmental mission.
Take care of the team, and they take care of customers.
We invest in fair wages, safety training, proper equipment, and a respectful work environment. When our team feels valued and supported, that positive energy shows up in every customer interaction and every pallet that leaves our facility.
Get better every day.
We look for ways to improve our processes, our quality, and our service. Whether it is optimizing a delivery route, improving our inspection checklist, or finding a better way to repair a damaged stringer — continuous improvement is a team effort.
